Mediation - Some Tips About Mediation

Mediator's Role | Confidentiality | The Mediation Process | Some Tips About Mediation | Additional Resources

1. Eat something before you come to mediation. It is very important to be able to concentrate, sometimes for several hours, and not be distracted by hunger.

2. Let your attorney know if you need a break during the mediation to use the restroom, to smoke, to take medication, or simply to clear your head.

3. Make a list of your goals ahead of time. Remind yourself of your goals if things get difficult during mediation, and make an effort to get back on track.

4. Carefully review the handout, "Guidelines For Negotiating," for helpful suggestions on how to make mediation work for you.

5. Mediation usually costs $125 to $150 per hour for each hour of mediation. This cost is usually equally shared by the parties. You will make that payment at the end of each mediation session, so bring your checkbook to the mediation.
